Mentor Coaching

Mentor Coaching for an ICF Credential consists of coaching and feedback in a collaborative, appreciative and dialogued process based on an observed or recorded coaching session to increase the coach’s capability in coaching, in alignment with the ICF Core Competencies.

Laser Focused Mentor Coaching will give you valued feedback on your use of the ICF coaching core competencies in your recorded coaching session.  You will submit a recording 1 week prior to our session which I will listen to and prepare feedback.  I will email you a feedback form and we will do a deeper dive on our call.  This program is perfect for the coach who is either currently in their training program or just completed a training program and need to fulfill the Mentor hours.

In our Refresh and Focused Mentor Coaching we spend half of our time refreshing your knowledge base of the ICF Coaching Core Competencies and half our time giving real time feedback on your recording of a coaching session.  The first session of the month will be a ½ hour session focused on a competency.  The second session of the month we will listen to a recorded session with the Mentor guiding you through a self-assessment and then providing feedback on the ICF Coaching Core Competencies.  If you’ve been out of your training for a while this is the perfect program for you!

Coaching Supervision

ICF’s Position on Coaching Supervision

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) supports Coaching Supervision for professional coach practitioners as part of their portfolio of continuing professional development (CPD) activities designed to keep them fit for purpose.

What is Coaching Supervision?

ICF defines Coaching Supervision as a collaborative learning practice to continually build the capacity of the coach through reflective dialogue for the benefit of both coaches and clients.

Coaching Supervision and Credentialing

ICF recognizes Coaching Supervision as an important element of a coach’s professional development, learning and growth.

ICF Credential-holders may submit up to 10 hours of Coaching Supervision (delivering or receiving) as Core Competency Continuing Coach Education (CCE) units toward their credential renewal.

Coaching Supervision may include:

  • Exploring the coach’s internal process through reflective practice
  • Reviewing the coaching agreement and any other psychological or physical contacts, both implicit and explicit
  • Uncovering blind spots
  • Ethical issues
  • Ensuring the coach is “fit for purpose” and perhaps offering accountability
  • Looking at all aspects of the coach and client’s environment for opportunities for growth in the system

ICF Research on Coaching Supervision

An increasing number of books and academic articles on the topic of Coaching Supervision are being published. ICF is actively contributing to this growing body of research, including its recent publication in International Coaching Psychology Review, (Volume 12, No. 1, March 2017), which identified key benefits for coaches who receive Coaching Supervision. These benefits include:

  • Increased self-awareness
  • Greater confidence
  • Increased objectivity
  • Heightened sense of belonging
  • Reduced feelings of isolation
  • Increased resourcefulness

PCLA Master Coach, Shawn Preuss, Offers Coaching Supervision!

Supervision is a Professional Coaches ultimate holistic support and accountability system!  After nine years of training coaches, I’ve realized the immense need for continued support for professional coaches.  For as long as I’ve trained coaches, I’ve mentored coaches, focusing on their skill in the use of the ICF Coaching Core Competencies.  Mentoring grows coaching professionals in a thriving profession!

However, there is much more to being in the coaching profession.  I see Coaching Supervision as filling the gap between continuing to grow as a coach and continuing to grow yourself as an individual and professional.

I offer two types of Coaching Supervision:

Supervision Engagement – Similar to a Mentoring Engagement.  Sign up for 10 sessions and use as needed over a years’ time.

‘As-Needed’ Supervision – Sometimes Coaches need ‘in the moment’ supervision, guidance, and support.  I offer 30-minute, 45-minute and 1 hour calls on a ‘as needed basis.’  Simply email me at and put Supervision Call in the subject line and I will respond as soon as possible.

Some topics coaches have reached out to me for:

  • Designing and Creative Ideation
  • Ethical Situation
  • Team and Group Coaching Questions
  • Setting Fee’s
  • Conflict with Sponsors or Clients
